Yes dear sluicers, the canal is starting to draw anglers back as summer starts to fall away, so I was back on the flyers today at Leyland Mill Lane. Instead of getting blown down to Senecar, we were pegged under the trees, which gave it a bit of a fairer feel (no pegs 101, 102, etc...)
I got peg 82 which usually throws up the odd decent skimmer, so off I set to refamiliarise myself with butty fishing. It soon came back to me and all was well for the first half an hour - a few roach on the punch and a couple of blade skimmers. A couple of boats later and a few of us were scratching our heads. I pinned a maggot on and soon had a small billy, followed by another - then another.
I changed lines and had a skimmer around 3oz, then another about twice the size. Not long after that I had a nice one around 12oz, then we were spent!! No bites, no signs of life - it was as if someone had switched the fish off.
The skies then went dark and the rain lashed down in long showers - enough to see a few off home. Come the weigh-in, Steve Mayo took the spoils with 4-12, and Gerry Roscoe was second with 4-3. I think I was 3rd in my section and beat either side of me, so that was the first hurdle overcome - pity I only managed 1-12-8 on the scale though.
There's always tomorrow at Cowling...
