The big story today was the winning weight - off my favourite peg (16) which went to John Atherton. He had a number of slabs, a tench and some smaller skimmers and hybrids for 37lb 10oz. John fished the tip with a small feeder, which was the only realistic method given the strong, gusting wind which hampered many on the bank today.
John probably would've had a few more fish had he not been sky-lined by a pleasure angler who wandered along the bank during the last hour of the match. The dippy dangler then went and setup on the very next peg to John - a bit of a stupid thing to do, but there's always a village somewhere that's missing it's idiot. It happened to me early on in the season and the offending twonk got politely told to move five pegs down out of the way - maybe some signage and rule amendments are required to stop this happening again...
There were a couple of 15lbs and a couple 10lbs, so I was well out of it from peg 13 with my 5lb 12oz. I had neglected to sling the tip rod in the car (first time in a month) and today was the day for tip fishing - especially as I was pegged in the wides. Presentation on the pole was almost impossible at some points, so I had to satisfy myself with whatever I could scrape together as the opportunities presented themselves. A nice hybrid about a pound and a half, a raft of tommies and a few nice billies on the worm as well as a few roach on the maggot made up my net.
I stopped on after the match (nowt better to do) and strangely the roach fed willingly on the caster after the net had been emptied. It can be an infuriating place to be sure...
According to Col, themp is doing it on the cut, so I'll be on there next Saturday having a dabble. It's time to get back into the canal stuff now that Sepember is nearly upon us, with thoughts of planning for the Winter League beginning to loom.
Before long it'll be time to dish-out the team clothing - are you having some of that Graham?
