Monday nighters - Week 5

It was like a scene from Deliverance before the start of the match tonight. While we were waiting for everyone to arrive for the draw, the distinct sound of hammering was heard eminating from the wood. I thought I'd imagined it at first, then Terry heard it and so did a few others. What then followed was a bit foolhardy, but seemed the right thing to do at the time. We all went into the wood and attempted to flush-out whoever it was monkeying around in there. As a couple of the chaps said at the time, going up the match length and leaving a line of cars there while person(s) unknown were pratting about within a few yards of them wasn't a good idea.

We scrambled around for a few minutes (Chuck Norris it definitely wasn't) and after doing a sort-of sweep of the wood we found no-one. We then went back to the car park and within minutes we heard the sound of something (wildlife I presume) squealing. No Wrighty, it wasn't 'like a pig...'

Enough of the odd goings-on - onto the match. I drew end peg again and this time I was in the wides on the perfectly flat peg 13. It was towing through quite nicely and it looked to me like it could be good for a few fish. At the all in, a few cups of groundbait and loose feed were put in and I set off in high spirits. A few blank run-throughs later I wasn't so sure. A bit of a re-think with the rigs and I was soon into a decent roach, which was the only fish I had for the first hour. I tried the heavy rig with corn 'for a change' and was immediately rewarded with a hybrid of around a pound and a half. Another go on the corn drew a blank and I was left scratching my head again.

After loosefeeding a few pinkies I found that the roach had taken a fancy to them. I caught well on them at 11m for the next hour without really seeing any indications from anything decent.

At the weigh-in, I put 6lb 7oz on the scales which was good enough for my second 2nd place in two days. Elsewhere on the length, Mick Derbyshire on my left was third after bagging a tench just before the end of the match and Graham Johnson took the honours for the fourth Monday night in a row from peg 7 with 11lb-odd including a 6lb pike which was nabbed on a lobworm.

RESULT:

1 Graham Johnson 11lb 5oz
2 Mark Rimmer 6lb 7oz
3 Mick Derbyshire 3lb 13oz
