2009 S&DAA Summer League - Week 5

Lots of rain came down this week and there was more falling for the first half of today's match. There were a few very large rafts of reeds drifting up & down which caused a few headaches for a couple of us. Being drawn on the end peg, I had four major scooping sessions to contend with - helping the islands on their way.

Sport has dropped off considerably over the last week, with all the fresh water entering the system and the inevitable pumping which follows it. The waterway had seen pumping overnight, as all the debris from up at Nucks Wood was now on the match length.

My draw hand has gone from one extreme to the other - three weeks at one end of the length then today I was at the extreme other. All went well at the beginning with a string of roach on the shell, then there was a bit of a lull and then I lost a decent fish which I didn't see. The very next put-in resulted in a healthy tench around three & a half pounds. After that I struggled for any sign of life in front of me. I fed down the side and had a couple of half-bites then went out at 13m and had a small hybrid. Shipping back the fish suddenly veered sideways and a very large bow wave followed it - Esox was in my peg...

The next two fish succombed to ol' Esox - despite shipping in as fast as I could and on different sides, they were intercepted with quite spectacular results; obvious a squadron working together...

As the all-out loomed, I managed to string together about half a pound of roach in a mini-flurry of activity, but had to settle for 6lb 8oz which gave me 2nd on the day and five summer league points. By my reckoning, that's 12 so far, but Capt. Tabron will have to confirm it.

RESULT:

1 Terry Cookson 9lb 3oz
2 Mark Rimmer 6lb 8oz
3 Paddy Peacock 5lb 8oz
