2009 S&DAA Summer League - Week 1

John Ball Trophy.

First match of the season on the sluice today, and a great turn-out. The match scene has now been spruced-up, so there were a few changes to the draw, the payout and sections, etc. There was even a match newsletter with lots of handy information in it. The John Ball trophy was also on show and there was a brief presentation to the placed anglers in last year's individual league.

There were a few old faces making a very welcome return and some new faces who were equally welcome. We ended up running out of room on the car park, such were the numbers. Wrighty unveiled the new team clothing, although acid-yellow Pringles hats and yellow Tesco 'Happy to Help' polo shirts aren't exactly the future Jerry - at least I don't think they are.

The Tizer was on hand, but disappointingly there was no official opening ceremony for the bridge. Probably just as well because Wrighty forgot the canopes... Get the bedding plants out Wrighty - say it with flowers...

The clank of spurs was heard on the bank today as Wyatt Tabron strode into town, cooling the barrel of his six-shooter after claiming his first victim - it was either that or his Chalfonts were playing him up again... If you turn up late you're gonna get run outta town - which was exactly what happened to one 'unlucky' latecomer...

The fishing was customarily slow, unless (like Wrighty) you were sat on a nest of angry Tench. He was, and after losing five, eventually scull-dragged no 6 to the net. It looked like it'd been in a fight when it was weighed, but it was still heavier than the result of my labours. I had a very sedentary match on peg 1, with no fish showing and only a few tiny skimmer sand a Perch of around 12oz for my trouble.

The winner was Steve Wilson who had a much more active match on peg 8 - the ffinal result will no doubt appear on the official SDAA website sometime this millenium.

Finally - an apology to the Jockster for some bum info. I gave him. For some reason I had it in my head that Pike didn't count in the summer matches. I'm sure I've had this discussion with someone at length in the past, or been quoted it by someone else, but they DO count. It doesn't really matter now because by the time we got to talking about it on the bank he'd already returned the fish he'd snared during today's match, but I stand corrected.

RESULT:

1 Steve Wilson 8lb 15oz
2 Dave Humphries 6lb 6oz
3 John Atherton 6lb 5oz

Sections:
Brian Woods, Bob Moss, Paul Drew

Aye I remember a fella sayin he won a match with a 6lb pike he had caught. I was on the sluice between 12 and 6 today fishing my tip rod. I had loads of roach, rudd, perch and skimmers. I also even had two pike on maggot! although one came off.
