It was a strange & frustrating day today. The team finally recorded their first finish away from 10th place, and I very nearly took up golf.
When I was informed of where my peg was (Piggery length at the top of Gorst Lane) I was mildly optimistic. When I got there, and saw where the next peg was (next to the wires) I was still a squeaky bit optimistic. It's a great pleasure peg - with some 2olb+ carp caught there this time last year. I've had plenty of big hybrids off it and some very nice tench, so I was bounding off towards it with some gusto I can tell you.
Sadly, it wasn't to be - my match was a real grind, with nothing showing to bread, caster, pinkie, squatt. In fact all my fish (such as they were) fell to the humble maggot - the first time in a long time I've had to rely on them to get me some fish. They were all small billies from down the track on my groundbait line and 3 or 4 roach up to the reeds at 13m in the latter stages, giving me 0-12-0 and 7 points.
The boats were at their most challenging today - the speed of some causing me to reflect on whether their helmsmen would translate their boating skills to the road with such eagerness. There really are some muppets in deckshoes on the Leeds-Liverpool...
We had two decent returns on the day - Capt. Tabron was 5th overall and 3rd in his section with 5-1-0 and Melanie was 4th, but the very late arrival (its not here even now) of the results file from Mr. Smiff means I still don't know what her finishing weight was. For a spectacular change we weren't last on the day, scraping up off the basement position - Hindley keeping it warm for a week...
