WDAA Flyer - Adlington Lay-bys

Went up to Adlington for a chuck on the flyer today - first one I've been on since November at the Marina. Speaking to a few of the chaps at the draw, we were all of the same opinion about the growing scourge of the canal - water gypsies.  Everywhere there's parking next to the water there seem to be growing numbers of boats with owners who simply dodge from one temporary mooring to another.  It's buggering up the banks and getting harder & harder to peg matches.  The length up to Rawlinson Lane is now another prime example.

Anyway - enough of depressing talk about boats; the draw was made and I pulled out the peg next to Skew Bridge.  Not noted as being particularly good, I wasn't feeling very optimistic but it was a nice day (possibly the warmest of the year so far) and the wind wasn't in my face (unlike Sunday) - things could be worse.

At the all-in I got going on my bit line and after a bit of faffing to get the line away from the overhanging branches I had a bite.  Lifting into it, I was met with a big thud and lots of elastic coming out. Gingerly shipping back, the elastic moved across the front of me and it wasn't too long before the culprit revealed itself - a bream just under 2lb - foul-hooked in the front nearside wing...

Colin Savage on the next peg gave it a large 'hrumph', uttered an unrepeatable, shrugged and turned back to his float; I couldn't have had a better start really.  I wish I could report a series of similar fish which followed; a bit like George who came up the path claiming six big skimmers - then nowt for over an hour, which he followed with a sheepish grin (which told me it was all arse-gravy...); but I can't.  I ended up with four fish from four bites for 2-7-12.  It got me the section money, but the proper weights were on Rawlinson Lane side of the footbridge.  Dave Benson took the honours with 4lb-odd, followed by three weights of over 3lb.  If I remember rightly, first misser was Jack (I caught 'em all under my feet) Rogers.

Saturday flyer is at Parbold, then Gratton Shield at Burscough on Sunday.
