A chuck on the cut - for a change...

I went all minimalist tonight and nipped into BAS for a couple of scoops of bait for an evening on the canal. I hadn't been down to Spark Bridge since the canal knock-ups were being held on there in that 'lull period' - after the Spring League but before the start of the season.

I'd heard that there were a few nice bags of skimmers coming out, so I dragged out the canal box and just slung it in the back of the car - no trolley or stacks of rigs, just the usual few I always use on the canal and that was it.

It was very quiet when I got there and it went decidely overcast after a few minutes. I setup two rigs and just fed a few dabs of liccy on one line and a couple of nuggets of groundbait on the other. There were plenty of fish moving about - in fact anywhere you cared to look there were signs of life.

It wasn't long before the butty line was producing roach and there was a long line of dots in the slice before I failed to swing one in. After around an hour I still hadn't seen a boat and had only seen one person - a dogwalker who looked like she might not make it home again; sweat (or should that be 'perspiration') blinding her... Take the 'C' off CHIPS and what have you got love??

Bubbles started to show on the groundbait line, so I went over that and soon had a string of little skimmers, along with a few token hybrids - the difference in the fight being instantly recognisable by the amount of elastic being taken.

With slime all over the place, I decided to pull the pin early to get my gear cleaned off. I spent 15 minutes trying to tease the No7 section out of the No8 when I was setting up (gunked up) so to avoid any silly (& costly) breakages, I packed up and departed. There were around 6-7lb of lovely little silvers in the net when it was pulled out - a rewarding way to spend a few hours on the canal.
