Thats the first league over, and from a personal perspective, it's proved to be another few positive (if stumbling) steps up the learning curve. I drew what was laughingly described as the match-winning peg by the 'Three Wise Men' (you know who you are...) It's a pity the anecdotal evidence used to substantiate this claim was probably 15-20 years out of date. The last time there were big skimmers & billys in that peg, they were being speared by Vikings off the side of a longboat...
Steve Millward bagged the section from the other end (under the motorway) with less fish than me, but a much better stamp. Colin's weekend went from bad to worse (he wasn't in the best of moods after yesterday's magnificent result) as he struggled for a few ounces mid-section.
Not had the results for the rest of the team confirmed yet (where's that email Trevor??) , but it seemed that we had the (now traditional) brace of stinkers; the names change (I was one of them last week), but the numbers are high - something we need to work on if we're to progress.
We had a minor dilemma while I was weighing-in which set me thinking. For some stupid reason, I left our scales at home so picked up a set at the draw. The first few pegs went without a problem but I had to try & weigh one angler in who 'd only caught a pair of eyes which (after falling through the basket twice) eventually clung to the mesh long enough for me to proclaim that he was getting 4 drams because the fish wouldn't move the beam. Nowt wrong with that and everyone agreed. I got to the next peg and the lad had a roach which was twice the size as the last one but that wouldn't move the beam either - what was I supposed to give him - 4 or 8 drams? We all agreed it was 8, but it goes to show that even though Avon Beam Scales are very accurate when calibrated, they really are getting to be a long-in-the-tooth method of weighing-in; especially if they're past their first flush of youth as this set was. I'm not knocking the owners - they're one up on us because they've actually got a set. I just hope (if we're going to continue using them going ahead into the future) we can get a good set we can rely on. Bring on digital scales is my view.
Next week its the Gratton Shield at Burscough Town Centre (ticket match) so if the temperatures keep rising, it'll be bream and skimmers hopefully. The week after is the start of the Spring League, with the first match at Adlington (Bonds Bridge, Lay-Bys and Cowling have been mentioned but not confirmed)
