I tagged-along for Team Strap-On's latest outing which was to Wyresdale Park at Scorton. I must admit, when I looked at the map to see where we were going, I thought the lake we fished was part of the Wyreside complex which is right next door, but by all accounts it's not theirs.
The lake itself is in a very scenic setting with trees around all four sides and plenty of well-spaced pegs. There were no other anglers all day, so we had the lake to ourselves. Apparently, the lake holds roach, perch, chub, carp and tench. Nobody mentioned the trout, so it was a bit of a surprise when Rob landed a brownie first chuck. The place is teaming with little perch and they're everywhere - I spent around half an hour fishing with my top 2 and my record was 26 perch, 2 roach and 2 rudd - all with the same red maggot!!
I got seen off by a large carp at the beginning which I got out of two snags, but it did me in a big snag near the side. A little while later, I got done again; this time by a lunking great snig. Nobody told us about those either...
Wherever you feed and whatever you put in the water, it's never more than a few seconds before those perch are scouting for stuff to eat. I swapped rigs to an olivette setup to try and get the bait down & away from them, but they were still snaffling it - even on the bottom. There are some very nice roach and I managed to catch some tench in very nice condition on various hookbaits. I got taken for a trip around the lake by another carp towards the end before it parted company in another snag. Even later, I saved some face by landing a snig around 2lb, which brought some colourful contributions from the other end peg...
It's a lovely place, has plenty of fish and is setup well for matches. I'll certainly be going back in the near future to check-out some of the other pegs. Good choice Rob, get some more lads down next time...
