Well, that was a turn up for the books... All thoughts of big bags of skimmers and slabs were quickly cast aside (d'you see what I did there?) as the vast majority struggled at Halsall. There was lots of banter between Standish & BAS Black at the pub - mainly between Keith and Porky, but I'm sure this will be fully explained in Pete Lucas's write-up later.
Suffice to say, there were a few horror stories on the cut today. We had a maximum return in our total and we weren't the only ones either. Sams blasted it on the day with 16 points and I had the match winner on the next peg to me on the short length at Pinfold. Bearing in mind that all the frame weights in the final match of last year's Spring League came from where Steve Gallop & I were sat, it was no surprise when Steve bagged three good bream with his first three put-ins. With 6lb in the bag in the first 15 minutes, it looked pretty clear where the section win was going. As an interested onlooker, it was quite a spectacle - then I remembered that I was supposed to be fishing against him - not watching him...
I waited an hour for my first fish which was a small roach, followed very soon after by a slightly larger perch. Another big wait (about an hour) was broken by a snig around half a pound and that was joined in the net by another perch; baggin' I most certainly wasn't... That was it really for me - no more bites and no more fish.
Steve Gallop took first place on the day with 7-2-0, Dave Trafford was second with 5-4-8 and Ant Marsden was third with 3-13-0
We're back at the Slipway again next week for the final round, which is being pegged on Gorst Lane. Do we have any volunteers to shovel the big pile of road planings off the little lay-by? If not, it's going to make for some interesting parking by the bungalow...
