Nice day, not so nice fishing. It was a struggle - and that's no exaggeration. With parking, boats and other logistics to take into consideration, it was a bit of a palava today - with the HQ being at the Waters Edge and the fishing on t'other side of the lump at Parbold.
The sections were staggered from Spencers Bridge, through Deans Lane, Culvert Lane and back towards the narrows before Parbold-proper. Once through Mill Lane bridge there was another section opposite the flats and which held the sometimes-flyer on the bend.
I was exactly where I didn't want to be, which was in E-section which ended at the narrows and started (where I was) past the reeds at Culvert Lane. I've only ever fished here once previously, having scroated my section with 2lb-odd of small skimmers a couple of years ago. It's a pretty barren stretch with no cover on the far bank and a path right next to the water - making fishing difficult. We all assembled after the draw and stood looking at, well - nowt much really. I'd walked from the Windmill so was shot-at when I got there, but there were plenty of folk stood around just shrugging their shoulders and planning for snigs.
Deano was on my left and Ant was at the end of D section on my right. Tommy (I'm suffering with Guinness poisoning) Fairhurst was next to Ant and he wasn't fancying it much at all. We got going amid much snipping of worms and while there was plenty of snig-snaring being attempted, there wasn't a lot of owt else going on. I tried down the track and got nowt, went on the snig line and got nowt, then went across on the far side and caught a gonk, first chuck. That was to be the only productive line all day with tiny roach being the only takers. While Deano and Ant caught snigs either side of me, there were none in front of me - and it wasn't for the want of trying, I can tell you. All I managed on my snig line was a binliner full of shi'ite and a sock on the very next chuck.
I finished with a hard-earned 0-10-0 for 6 points which, given the peg was about as much as I expected. The pegs with features at the other end of the section produced - in fact, Dave Marsh framed overall with his big 2lb, which included a rub-a-dub-dub.
When our friend Steve sends the full results through, I'll post them ont reet. Our team stuttered today and allowed the other BAS rapscallions ahead in the overall, but as I reminded Porky in the pub - it's a marathon, not a sprint.
Round 3 is at Burscough next Sunday, so I'll be spending most of this week hoping I'm not first peg through the bridge again like last Saturday...
