Wasted day on the Rufford Canal

With no Spring League match because it's Easter Sunday, word reached me (by an encrypted micro-dot sent via carrier pigeon, as I'm apparently not on the guest list) of an unofficial 'knock-up' on the canal at Sollom.

Following the usual pre-match antics we ended up fishing the Asland side of the road bridge. It was great to see Graham Johnson back in the land of the living again. Graham has had a nightmare few months after smashing his ankle to smithereens way back in early February. The choice of pegs didn't help Graham, so I wheeled his barrow to his peg while he hobbled along behind with a slimmed-down pole holdall slung over his shoulder.

It was always going to be a grueller - but I didn't think it would turn out as bad as it did. After an hour & a half of - well, nothing much, I went for a stroll to see what was occurring. I walked the length to find that Hodgey was bossing it (out of sight from my peg on the way to the pasture) but everyone else was struggling. Colin, also day-tripping from the Spring League like me, Paul, Bob & Hodgey had bagged a couple of bootlaces and not much else. Brian (I'm now a free man) Woods was struggling on a very unfamiliar venue - this being the first time he'd fished it.

I went back to my peg wondering why I wasn't back at Spark Bridge catching those skimmers, roach and big hybrids which had kept me entertained yesterday because I must've had 7-8lb in the three hours I was there - making today's stint more than a little tiresome.

As Baitboat Bob kept reminding me, at least I had a feature in front of me (stick-ups) because I managed to nick a few small roach and skimmers from under them and eventually finished with 1-9-0. The 'match' was won by Alan Birchall from the bottom of the gallops with 7lb-odd. Well done Alan - nice new Octoplus seatbox by the way.
